Badia A Passignano 1993

BadiaAPassignano.jpg

We had guest this past week and they brought us this bottle of wine. I will start with the story we were told. They had been out to dinner at a fancy restaurant in Italy and were looking over the wine list. Many of the wines were very expensive. They went with what they felt was a reasonably priced bottle of wine. When they ordered this the sommelier said that it was his favorite wines. They really enjoyed the wine. A couple of days later our friend was at a wine shop, still in Italy, and found the same wine. He purchased the wine and brought it back. They had been sitting on the bottle thinking of all the people they know trying to figure out who would appreciate this bottle the most and that was who they were going to share it with. They chose us.

Now for the wine. This was a fantastic bottle of wine a Chianti Classic Reserve from 1993. It was not as thick or as sharp as other chianti I have had. It had a black cherry and current with a bit of tar flavor. I really enjoyed it. With four people it went rather quickly. I did not have anything on hand that I felt that I could follow it with. Most of what I have on hand is earthy dark reds or sweet German whites. I plan to bring this bottle to my wine merchant and see if he knows anything about it, or if he could get it. I hope he can because this would be a great bottle to have on hand. We had it with grilled local Italian sausages, homemade salsa, a salad with green goddess dressing, and grilled peaches in vanilla ice cream.
