Hogue Genesis Syrah 2000

A couple of days ago I was at one of the local wine merchants, and he suggested this wine to me as a substitute for the Ravenswood Icon Syrah. This is a fairly good syrah; it is almost comparable to the 2001 Icon. It is not quite there but since the 2002 Icon is so bad it is a good sub. It is very complex and very, very oaky. It has a lot of fruit. It has the complexity and structure of a good syrah. I do not know how much it cost and I do not know if I would get another bottle. It was a good wine but I was not blown away.

One aspect of this wine that I appreciate is that it is from Washington State. I have been hearing some good things about Washington wines and it is refreshing to see wines from outside the typical regions.

The same wine merchant told me that he is getting in five new syrahs in the next couple of weeks. We’ll have to see how it stacks up over these new ones.
