Valckenberg 2003 Pinot Noir Rheinhessen

Let me begin by saying that ever since the movie Sideways came out I have been very down on Pinot Noir. It seemed to me that a lot of people that saw this movie decided to go and buy Pinot because it was popular and not because they like it. I guess that it should have made me desire Merlot but it did not.

Last week I went to my favorite wine merchant. He knows my tastes really well. I was a little surprised when he said that I should get a bottle of Pinot Noir. He explained that as apposed to other pinots this is a very “girly” pinot but still good and complex. This too was a little weird because in general I do not like girly wines. I have tried a Gewürztraminer from this winery before so I decided to give it a try.

I brought it home, and Moxie and I opened it with dinner that night. It was not a fancy meal just a Middle-Eastern medley that I had thrown together. When we both very impressed with the quality of this wine. Moxie enjoyed it but I loved it. I could see why it was described as girly, it was much lighter than other Pinot Noirs or Rhone style wines I have had. It went well with the food; I think it would go well with most foods.

The bottle describes the bouquet as strawberry and wild raspberry. I did not agree with this. I felt at the time that it more accurately was described as wild cherry and mushroom. This is a little odd; when I checked the Valckenberg web site the wine is described as tones of black cherry. It was still a very full wine that had a lot of complexities.

Needless to say the day after Moxie and I finished this bottle I went and purchased more. I really love German wines and this is another one to love. I would recommend this to almost anyone. It may be hard to get. German Pinot Noirs are hard to find and this particular bottle is only sold in one store in New Hampshire.

I would also recommend Valckenberg’s Gewürztraminer and to check out their web site, you can link there by clicking on the image above. It is a very thorough web site that even includes PDFs of maps of the vineyards the winery has. The site even includes images of their tasting rooms and it looks impressive and fun.
